“After losing my first 30 lbs in 5 weeks, I knew I was onto something major!” Eleasa Du Bois of Tight Body Makeover commits to helping women start off the new year empowered to lose weight and get healthier.

How many times have you, (or someone you know), started off the year like gangbusters with a quest to lose weight and get healthier? Gyms are packed to capacity between January and February, but somewhere around mid March, people lose steam and start to slack off. What happened? Life gets in the way and we lose the desire to achieve our goals. Then we wait until the end of the year to get excited and do it all over again. How can we break the cycle?

When the student is REALLY ready, the teacher will appear. Often times, we as women are so focused on helping others, it’s difficult to admit when we need help ourselves. There comes a time when we must go within, be honest with ourselves and take massive action to achieve the desired results.

After countless failed weight loss attempts, in January of 2010, I decided to commit to my own rescue and do something different. I started working with a weight loss coach that helped me to demolish the excuses and stay on track to achieve my goals. Throughout this particular journey, I became inspired to also become a weight loss coach and empower women to focus on developing habits that contributed to their success story.

There are usually some common questions that run through your mind when embarking upon a journey to lose weight. Let’s look at those questions.

Where Do I Start?

Decide-Commit-Succeed! Commitment is the key component in this equation. Start with a plan.  Write down your goals with deadlines.  A coach can help you map out what is required to achieve your goals within a time frame.   Place copies of your goals in places that will really make a difference for you. My coach and my accountability partners all had copies of my goals. I deliberately chose 3 accountability partners, because I was committed to developing success anchors. Success anchors are things/people that reinforce your will to win.  It’s hard to fall off the wagon when you have a power team working in your favor. Also keep a food and fitness journal. Keeping journals encourages you to be brutally honest with yourself. My coach helped me determine why I felt I needed a soda and a donut for breakfast each morning. Through this a-ha moment, I was able to change my relationship with food, and started the process of releasing limiting beliefs about myself along with releasing pounds.

What Are Some Ways to Incorporate Healthier Eating?

First, adopt a new mindset. “I eat to live, not live to eat.” This mindset helps you to practice making better choices. Foods that you consume are either cleansing or clogging to your digestive tract. Consuming a high amount of cleansing foods is paramount for weight loss. To start this process easily, the first step we take is to detox the body. Through the detoxification process, you will diminish cravings for certain foods and some cravings may disappear.  My detoxification process is designed to help you release 8-12 pounds during the first few weeks of the weight loss coaching program. Also, eat 6 times a day. You should nourish your body every 3 hours. Having 3 healthy meals & 3 snacks will diminish sweet cravings and increase the level of satiety. As you get used to eating 6 times a day, a good way to jump start your metabolism is with a protein meal replacement shake. The shake helps you to feel full as you also have the nutrients, vitamins and minerals your body needs to encourage the release of weight.

How Do I Exercise?  If you haven’t exercised since high school, your needs are much different from someone who was previously active but may have fallen off track with exercise.  During our weight loss consultation, we help determine where you are and customize a program to point you in the right direction for a great jump start. Changing your mindset regarding exercise will help you sharpen the will to win.  “For instance, once I had surpassed my goal and lost 65 lbs, I knew I had to continue being active to maintain my success. While trying different exercises, I developed a passion for running and acquired 2 accountability partners so that I could run at least 3 times a week.”  Note – your accountability partner’s will to win must equal or surpass yours. On days when you need a push, it helps to have a partner who will propel you to make no excuses and get it done!  Simple ways to start are as follows:

  • Take the stairs more often throughout your day
  • Park farther from your location and walk briskly to and from your destination
  • If taking public transportation, get off a few stops early and walk to your location
  • Always keep a pair of sneakers in your desk at work. If you have to miss your regular gym time because of a meeting, you can always walk for 30 minutes during your lunch hour.

How Do I Keep Momentum?

A coach and accountability partners are key to keeping your momentum. My coach helped me to determine that I thrive in a group setting with my cardio workouts. Therefore, my accountability partners and I would challenge each other to find fun fitness classes or DVDs to try on a regular basis. Each week, try one new fitness routine and 1 new strength conditioning routine. The variety minimizes boredom and gives you a selection of routines to rotate every 4 weeks.  Also seek out friends and fitness pals that share your goals.  Join a recreation center and attend different fitness classes. Join social sites like Groupon and Living Social to grab deals on fitness experiences that you want to try. Often you can buy 1 ticket for a friend on these sites to give as gifts.  Gifting fitness experiences is a great way to sow into someone else’s success while potentially acquiring a new accountability partner.
